"A Preakness is a variation on the Manhattan, a favourite late night tipple. The important ingredient here is the Benedictine, which gives a subtle herbal complexity. Rye whiskey is a must – Bourbon is too sweet for this drink – but you can experiment with different combinations of spirit and red vermouth. A twist of lemon provides lift and fragrance."
Ingredients (5)
- 50ml rye whisky – we love Pikesville Straight Rye, but experiment with other distillers like Rittenhouse or Bulleit
- 20ml Cocchi Vermouth di Torino
- 5ml DOM Benedictine
- 3 dashes Angostura Bitters
- Lemon - for the twist garnish

1.Cut a piece of lemon rind for the twist, and set aside.

2.Pour all of the ingredients into a mixing glass or large shaker tin. Fill generously with ice. Stir with a bar spoon, taking care not to over-stir - make sure to taste for balance.

3.Strain into a frozen cocktail glass. Express lemon twist over the drink, discard twist and serve.

You will need a cocktail glass (martini, coupette or Nick & Nora), mixing glass, bar spoon, and a bar knife and board.
