Homemade hot-dogs are the best kind.

Ingredients (9)

  • 6 smoked wiener sausages (from selected supermarkets and good delis)
  • 6 hot dog buns
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) tomato sauce (ketchup)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) sweet mustard
  • 2 large pickled gherkins, thinly sliced
  • Fried Asian shallots (from Asian food shops), to serve

Red onion pickle (optional)

  • 150ml red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup (55g) caster sugar
  • 1 red onion, sliced into thin rounds

Don't forget you can add these ingredients to your Woolworths shopping list.

Method

  • 1.
For the red onion pickle, combine vinegar and sugar in a bowl, stirring to dissolve sugar. Add onion, cover and chill.
  • 2.
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bring a wide saucepan of water to a simmer, add hot dogs, reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes to heat through.
  • 3.
Meanwhile, slice hot dog buns lengthways from top, until halfway through. Place in oven for 2 minutes to warm through. When warm, spread a little ketchup inside each bun, push a hot dog into each and spread a good teaspoon of mustard across the hot dog. Arrange sliced gherkin across each hot dog in a fan pattern, along with pickled onions, if using. Sprinkle with fried shallots to serve.
