Healthier white Christmas balls

These little morsels featuring cranberries, pistachios and coconut will be a hit this Christmas.

What you need to know before you start

This recipe is incredibly simple to make. There’s no actual cooking required, so it’s a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen. It takes just 30 minutes from start to finish, including the 20 minutes it takes for the balls to firm up in the fridge.

You’ll need a food processor to blitz all the ingredients together and a clean working surface to roll the mixture into balls. These little Christmas balls also make excellent edible gifts for family and friends. If you’re choosing to gift them this Christmas, you may wish to gather wrapping materials like plastic wrap, ribbons or food-safe containers.

Why are these the best healthy White Christmas balls?

Leave the oven, microwave and stove-top off – you won’t need it for this no-cook, no-bake recipe. It’s easy to prepare, takes two steps to bring together, and is a wonderful way to include children in the festive spirit.

When it comes to the ingredients, we use dried cranberries, pistachio kernels and coconut oil for a healthier option. During a period when it’s common to overindulge, these Christmas balls are a lighter way to enjoy the holiday season.

What is White Christmas in Australia made from?

Traditionally, White Christmas slice is made from a mixture of rice bubbles, glacé fruits, sugar, coconut oil and sometimes white chocolate. Our version is made with nuts, maple syrup, desiccated coconut and spices for a healthier twist that doesn’t compromise on the classic White Christmas taste.

What ingredients you’ll need

Maple syrup: This natural sweetener provides a rich, caramel-like flavour, making it a healthier alternative to refined sugars.

Ground cinnamon: Cinnamon adds warmth and spice to the mixture.

Ground allspice: The slightly sweet, aromatic and warm flavour of allspice enhances the overall taste of the White Christmas.

Vanilla sugar: This offers a sweet vanilla-like taste to the dish.

Virgin coconut oil: Coconut oil adds richness and a subtle tropical flavour while helping to hold the balls together.

Dried cranberries: These chewy, tart fruits add natural sweetness, bite and vibrant colour.

Pistachio kernels: Rich in healthy fats, pistachios add a lovely crunchy and nutty flavour.

Desiccated coconut: The finished balls are rolled in a layer of desiccated coconut for texture, bite and a nutty kick.

How to make raw White Christmas balls

To recreate this recipe at home, add all the ingredients into a food processor and blitz until well combined. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and add desiccated coconut into a small dish. Using clean hands, roll 1 heaped tablespoon of mixture into balls. It’s during this step where you can get the little ones involved. To finish, roll the balls in the coconut to coat and refrigerate for 20 minutes or until firm.

How to store White Christmas balls

Store uneaten Christmas balls in an airtight container and place in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. If you prefer, you can also freeze them for up to 2 months to enjoy at a later date.
