Whether it’s an unrelenting lust for van life, the freedom of the wide-open road or the convenience of avoiding airports that beckons you to embark on a leisurely road trip, hiring a car (be it a mini van, a vintage convertible, or perhaps a more practical hatchback) can come with a hefty price tag.

Now, new research has emerged from ChooseMyCar, which analyses the cost of a week’s car hire in 100 countries to reveal the cheapest and most expensive destinations in which to rent a vehicle. The list of 100 countries lists them from most to least expensive.

So, which countries should you be choosing for a budget-friendly road trip? And which are at the top tier?

These are the most expensive countries to rent a car in:

  1. Cambodia, $1737.50
  2. Ghana, $1734.56
  3. Benin, $1636.12
  4. Burkina Faso, $1606.82
  5. Angola, $1292.92

And, these are the cheapest countries to rent a car in:

  1. Montenegro, $59.50
  2. Serbia, $82.52
  3. Croatia, $107.65
  4. Bosnia and Herzegovina, $113.50
  5. Guatemala, $157.28

How did Australia rank? A week’s car hire costs $717.11, which puts Australia at #74 out of 100.
