The island is making a comeback.
After the devastation that Kangaroo Island faced during the Black Summer bushfires of 2019/2020, it’s nice to see some good news coming out of Australia’s third-largest island. Wander have unveiled a suite of four new luxury eco pods, which will be opening to guests on December 1.
Overlooking Snelling Beach from the ridge above Middle River, each pod offers unbeatable views of the Great Australian Bight. There are four pods in total, each named after a constellation only seen in the southern skies. Three of the WanderPods sleep two and the largest pod sleeps four.
Wander has tried to minimise its carbon footprint. Eco-friendly mod cons include solar air conditioning, SubPod composting with native edible bush herbs, Pod&Parcel eco coffee pods and a rain shower. It also asks guests to keep consumption of power and water in mind during their stay.

When it comes to food, you’ll have to play chef. There is a fully-equipped kitchen with a cooktop, oven and full-size fridge included. You have the option to bring your own ingredients or have local supplies delivered to your door. The Tastes of the Island Pantry Box from Gastronomo is packed with seasonal produce and chef-prepared recipes, so you can dine knowing you’re supporting the sustainable growth of regional communities.
Little luxuries like a king bed dressed in Cultiver linen, outdoor stone bath and secluded outdoor deck will help you to unwind and relax throughout your stay. And just because the pods are remote, doesn’t mean you’ll be offline. There’s Wi-Fi available for those who’d rather not partake in a digital detox.
If you fancy switching off to take in the beauty of South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, feel free to tell everyone back home there’s no Internet access. We won’t tell.
Bookings are already open. Head to Wander to book your stay.
