Forget Mudgee – this is where you should spend your next weekend away.
Australia is a country renowned for its produce, so it’s no surprise that the nation is home to some of the world’s most revered foodie holiday destinations. Orange, Mudgee and the Hunter Valley have gained a reputation for being go-to spots for the food fanatics among us. But there’s a hidden gem that offers just as much when it comes to great produce – Goulburn Valley.
Adrian Pogue is one of Goulburn Valley Peaches’ key farmers and knows a thing or two about the region. “I am a third-generation farmer on our family property in Toolamba, Goulburn Valley. My grandfather planted our first orchard almost 100 years ago,” he says. Pogue’s family is just one of many throughout the district that plays an important role in the treasure trove of produce grown nearby. “We grow pears, peaches, apples, apricots on the orchard and run beef cattle, sheep as well as produce lucerne hay,” he says.
That’s 1,500 tonnes of fruit each year produced by the Pogue family for Goulburn Valley Peaches to be eaten around the nation. Goulburn Valley provides a hefty dose of Australia’s fresh produce. “I am very proud to know that our locally grown fruit is being enjoyed right around the country and presented to consumers in exciting ways,” Pogue says.
The district is not only a produce hotspot. There are also all kinds of foodie activities on offer, with a large array of vineyards and eateries. “The Goulburn Valley is a great place to discover with your family or friends,” Pogue says. “There are no shortage of wineries, local cafes and restaurants for foodies.”
And there’s more to do than just eat and drink. “I love some of the outdoor activities Goulburn Valley has to offer,” Pogue says. “There is water skiing, fishing and camping on the rivers and lakes along with some golf and tennis. Other great attractions include the splash park at Aquamoves and the adventure park at KidsTown.”
