Travellers that are fond of road trips and long weekends away, know and love Orange. A region that is rich with fine wines, good food and stunning country vistas – and just three hours from Sydney – it’s easy to see why it’s a favourite among city slickers looking to escape the big smoke. Now, there’s a shiny new reason to visit Orange, which comes in the form of a trio of luxury studio suites that are what long weekends are made of.

Basalt is the newest addition to Orange’s luxury accommodation offering. Perched on the hill of a family-owned cherry orchard, each of the architecturally-designed studios, by award-winning Mudgee-based architect, Cameron Anderson, boasts stunning views across the central tablelands. (Insider tip: The studios face eastward, so roll up the blinds and take in the sunrise from the comfort of the king size bed that is stylishly dressed with linen from Carlotta & Gee).

Each of the self-serviced studios has a different aspect and offers its guests complete privacy. Within the accommodations you’ll find a stunningly large concrete bathtub, from where you can soak away your stresses and take in the calming view thanks to a large bifold window.

There’s also a kitchenette that includes a fridge, dishwasher, induction cooktop and convection microwave, that is perfect for whipping up an easy meal to enjoy on the outdoor deck. If you have an appetite for a home cooked meal, but prefer to leave the cooking to someone else, you can pre-order meals from local catering and bakery, Racine. When you arrive, the meals will be in your fridge. Simply follow the directions on how to prepare.

Want to get a taste of the local dining scene? Basalt has already done the research for you. The handy in-room iPad is packed with useful guides, like the best cafes to visit for breakfast.

It’s here where Basalt’s attention to detail is impeccable. On the iPad there’s practical maps showing the best walking trails on the property, information on local artists who were commissioned by Basalt for the in-room art, and guides on how to use all the bells and whistles within the studio.

Every aspect of this lush stay is well thought out. By the bath you’ll find bath salts in addition to salus. body wash. In the kitchen the complimentary mini-bar goes beyond local treats, like chocolate covered nuts (albeit, absolutely delicious). The coffee beans have been pre-ground and are ready for the French press. Not sure how to use a French press? There’s an instruction card that tells you how to brew the perfect pot of coffee. Are you the type of person that needs a second barista-made coffee in the morning? Basalt has you covered. Caffeinate at Academy Coffee, located 10 minutes away in town, and it’s Basalt’s shout. You’ll find a complimentary coffee card as part of your welcome pack.

While we’re on the topic of food and drink, the continental breakfast includes a fresh sourdough loaf from Racine Bakery, butter, spreads, a bag of muesli, milk and a ready-made smoothie in the fridge for lazy mornings spent doing not much at all, which is what Basalt was made for, unwinding, taking it slow and and taking in all that Orange has to offer.

Beyond Basalt…

For a long lunch… Head to Antica Australis in Carcoar. About 30 minutes drive from the property, you come for the food and stay for the historical stories. Husband and wife team, Paolo and Kelly plate up a contemporary take on traditional Ciociarian cuisine to just 24 diners. There’s one seasonal set menu that is served to diners at the same time. Paolo works his magic in the kitchen while Kelly delves into the history and inspiration of each dish placed in front of you. Rich in flavour, fun and history.

For a wine tasting… Head to Angullong Cellar Door. The family owned and run vineyard has been in the family since the 1950s and takes full advantage of Orange’s cool climate. Producing a wide range of wines the Italian varietals like the Sangiovese and Barbera are standouts as is its Chardonnay, which the vineyard is known for.

For brunch… Head to The Agrestic Grocer. You’ll leave with a full stomach and car boot. Not just a cafe, here you can shop the very best of what the region has to offer. From locally produced relish, oils and chocolate to homewares and soaps. Food lovers will find it hard to resist a purchase here.
