It's all downhill from here.
Thredbo Resort in New South Wales just launched Australia’s only Alpine gondola, so we can all get from the ski fields to our après ski cocktail appointments (and back again) faster than ever before.
The Alpine resort – which has thrice been named Australia’s best ski resort – said that the gondola investment will replace the existing Merritts double chairlift and quadruple its capacity.
The gondola is a cabin-style lift similar to those found in Europe and North America. It’s driven by a massive, ultra-quiet slow-turning motor which is a lot more efficient than a conventional gondola. The new system took over two years of planning and development for the resort.
Among a host of benefits, the new addition is set to offer:
- Easier access for Village guests of all abilities to the Friday Flat and Cruiser area
- Fast turnaround access from the Gondola Mid-Station to the Top-Station for intermediate and advanced ski and snowboarders accessing the popular Dream Run and its surrounding tree runs
- Easier access for foot and scenic passengers to the Merritts Mountain House
- Reduced pressure on the Kosciuszko Express and Gunbarrel Express chairlifts

“Snow lovers will be thrilled with easier access to the Cruiser area and the Friday Flat beginners’ area, and with the improvements we have made to the popular Dream Run, including a new automated snowmaking system,” said Stuart Diver, General Manager of Thredbo Resort.
The resort have also announced a host of other improvements, including snowmaking on the dream run, additional car parking at Friday Flat, a brand new Pistenbully snow groomer and new SNOWsat depth technology for the resort.
The official opening of the gondola will take place on Saturday June 20th 2020.
