The appealing thing about cellar doors is the selection of wines available but the cheese platter which accompanies your tastings at Dirty Three Wines in Inverloch is worth the drive alone. In this beach town, ice creams are always on the menu and the best ones in town can be found at Gusto Gelateria. A few minutes drive away is the Kilcunda General Store, fabulous for breakfast. Tucked at the rear of the property is Udder & Hoe.

The Great Southern Food Festival occurs throughout the southern WA towns only a few hours from Perth (4-14 April, 2019). Plan a driving holiday and tour through stunning mountain ranges, national parks to magical white sand beaches, revelling all the while in delicious food and wine.

Surely the most picturesque food region around Canberra, the Brindabellas are perfect for cool climate wines. The Brindabella Hills Vineyard Cafe is a great spot to enjoy lunch and revel in the view.

Silky Oaks Lodge has an inspiring, insta-worthy dining room, an open treehouse in the jungle, where travellers can sample crocodileand kangaroo and ignite their senses with native seasonings. For excellent family dining, also in a leafy environment, don’t miss Whet. The local pub and backpackers, PKs Jungle Village, does regular pub meals as well as fragrant curries. Try some exotic ice cream flavours made from fruits grown on site at the Daintree Ice cream company. Araca-boi, Davidson Plum, mamey sapote and carambola are only some of the interesting options here.

Broome is well known for its pearl farms, red dirt and neverending beaches and there’s not much that can beat a Broome sunset. The sky blooms orange and purple as it sets over the Indian Ocean. A ringside view while indulging in a cocktail and a fresh seafood platter from the Sunset Bar and Grill at the Cable Beach Club, makes a wonderful moment just about perfect.

Famous for its rum of the same name, Bundaberg is a regional centre for farmers and a driving tour of the area offers visitors opportunities to buy direct from farmers. With macadamia nuts, sweet potatoes, avocados, dragon fruit, turmeric, limes, ginger, strawberries, beans, and tomatoes only some of the region’s fare, no one will go hungry. Stay on a farm and learn how to till the soil yourself.

The Agrarian Kitchen in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley offers paddock to plate cooking classes and the nearby Agrarian Kitchen Eatery is a smart casual dining space. The drive from Hobart through stunning countryside to this quaint town is just over 30 minutes. Accommodation is charmingly old style country comfort with a touch of glamour.

Loch is a town revived. Located in a renovated bank building, the Loch Brewery and Distillery offers a wide selection of brews, gin and whiskey. Across the road the new cafe, Loch Udder & Hoe, has a focus on wholesome food and supporting local producers. Try the kombucha and mill your own oats at this spectacular architectural reincarnation of an old op shop.

The Red Feather Inn, a luxury bed and breakfast close to Launceston, has a cooking school that sources ingredients from its own heritage farm, as well as from local producers. Check the schedule for everything from sausage making, bread baking and fresh Thai cooking classes.

Visit Collector on the first Sunday in May for the Pumpkin Festival. Sample some of the best pumpkin based foods around. Some Cafe, in the town’s main street, has a paddock to plate philosophy, and Collector Wines is perfect for an afternoon tipple.

The Blue Mountains are hardly a secret but the foodie draw cards here might surprise travellers who come more for the hikes and the views. The luxurious Lilianfels Resort and Spa also contains Darley’s Restaurant, a fine dining affair worthy as a destination in itself. The surrounding towns also have excellent cafes and restaurants to keep you satisfied the whole weekend.

While the rock is certainly the main attraction here, there are a plethora of foodie experiences to tantalise your tastebuds. Enjoy the Tali Wiru fine dining experience in the desert, participate in a native bush food tasting tour or eat in style at Sails of the Desert Restaurant at Ayers Rock Resort.

Flying in on a tiny plane is only the first adventure to be had on King Island. The King Island Dairy is famous for its cheeses and the Meet your Beef company runs a true paddock to plate experience when you tour their 2000 acre property. An abundance of rock lobsters means they are reasonably priced and can be purchased, packaged in an esky and taken home with you in your hand luggage.

The Gateway town to the Barossa Valley makes a great base for exploring the region. The wine is spectacular and the food is of an equally high standard. Generations of producers have crafted mouth-watering, distinctive pastries, sweet treats, pickles, preserves and specialty breads.

From June to August is truffle season, and Canberra restaurateurs do it with pizazz. With truffle markets, masterclasses and wine matched lunches, this earthy delight beckons to all the true foodies.
