It’s in the rather wild Bouddi National Park near Gosford on the Central Coast that you’ll find Putty Beach campground. As its name suggests, this is a coastal getaway for the beach-inclined, and thanks to being close to Killcare offers easy access and ample amenities – a dream destination if you’re travelling with kids in tow.

Basic bush camping is catered to at Honeymoon Bay Campground, but with the region’s famously crystalline waters on your doorstep there’s little else you need (excepting a swimsuit). Due to limited space this rather exclusive campsite books out regularly – especially during school holidays – so get in as early as you can.

One of Sydney’s most popular waterfront camp sites, The Basin campground is only an hour’s drive out of Sydney and overlooks Pittwater. It’s the only place you can camp in Ku-ring-gai National Park and accessed via water taxi, boat or ferry which leaves from Palm Beach Wharf. The facilities are great and you can cool off at the sheltered beach or inland lagoon. The campground accommodates up to 350 campers.

A sleepy coastal hamlet between Naroom and Central Tilba, Mystery Bay campground is one of the few natural camping areas remaining on the NSW South Coast. The site fronts the ocean and is quite large as sites are scattered throughout the native bush. Facilities include cold showers, water taps and pit toilets. All sites are unpowered so you’ll need to bring your own energy source.

Located right on the beach and just 20 minutes from Lorne, or 35 minutes from Apollo Bay, there’s no shortage of places to cool at and around this coastal campground. The waves rolling will be the soundtrack of your camping adventure, while the mountains act as a backdrop.

Not so keen on pitching a tent, but want a taste of beachfront camping? Head to Marengo Family Caravan Park. Here you’ll find beachy, dog-friendly cabins, a playground, laundry and camp kitchen, and BBQ area. Perfect for families of all sizes and ages.

A perfect base to venture off on a scenic walk, swim or surf, Tidal River Campground is one of the most popular and well-equipped sites in the Wilsons Prom. Campers have the choice of a site nestled in the tea trees close to Norman Beach or a family-friendly site closer to the calm waters of the Tidal River.

Just a few minutes walk from the iconic Perlubie Beach, this campground has found social media fame thanks to the beach’s stunningly turquoise waters. The campground is extremely popular with caravaners (#caravanlife). Toilets and running water are available, but no showers. You’ll need to bring your own drinking water.

This one is for the wave chasers. Consisting of nine campsites overlooking the offshore islands, Cable Bay Campground offers access to incredible surf spots like Chainman’s surf break. Insider tip: the south facing campsites offer limited wind protection, so try to avoid them.

With 12 campgrounds and 63 designating camping sites in Coorong National Park, Ocean Beach is a favourite among most campers. Outdoor lovers relish the quietness of the waterway and grandeur of the dunes. There are 16 designated beach campsites but they can only be accessed by 4WD.

Incredibly white sands, unbelievably turquoise blue waters and stunning views of the Great Southern Ocean are what make Vivonne Bay one of the best camping spots on Kangaroo Island.

Lake Brockman Tourist Park is for the watersport lovers. Logue Brook Dam is the perfect spot for camping, waterskiing, swimming, canoeing, SUP and fishing. Whether you want to pull in with your caravan, pitch a tent, or book cabin, the tourist park accommodates all. There’s an adventure playground for the kids and access to one of the longest off-road cycling trails, Munda Biddi trail.

A large campground on the western side of one of Western Australia’s most iconic beaches. There are fifty-six compacted crushed rock reverse-in campsites at Lucky Bay campground, all of which are unpowered. Wake up to stunning views of Lucky Bay while the rolling waves will lull you into sleep at night.

There are 45 camping options on K’gari. Most beachside sites like the eastern beach, western beach and south western camping areas are not equipped with dingo deterrent fences so it’s not recommended for children under 14 years of age. All camping areas have limited capacity and often become booked out during peak season, so book early.

Camp behind the dunes on the Ocean Beach and take full advantage of the opportunity this site allows campers to boat, fish and explore the Fort Bribie ruins. To access the site, which stretches for 3km, you will need a 4WD. Campers are allowed to set up BBQs and campfires so be sure to bring the marshmallows.
