Sydney can get steamy in the summer but it always feels a bit fresher in the Southern Highlands. Just 120km south of the city, this is the closest major wine region to Sydney, home to more than 60 vineyards producing a wide range of cool-climate varietals. As the grapes slowly start to ripen expect to see workers busy in the vineyards, trimming the leaves to ensure the grapes get their share of sunlight. Head to Artemis Wines, where you can enjoy a wood-fired pizza or charcuterie board on the lawn, or to Centennial Vineyards, known for European varietals such as albarino and gruner veltliner. The heritage streetscapes and scenic countryside make the town of Orange a great year-round destination but it is perhaps at its loveliest during autumn, with vivid shades of red and, yes, orange blaze on trees and grapevines alike. Autumn is also the busiest season at any winery with vintage, the industry term for harvesting grapes, in full swing. To try the best of the area’s high-altitude wines – shiraz, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon are particularly popular – head to the De Salis Winery, where you can drink in panoramic views along with your wine. Fun fact one: the award-winning wineries of the Canberra region are actually located in NSW. Fun fact two: winter is one of the best times to visit, even though there may not appear to be anything happening in the vineyard. Not only do crisp winter days provide the perfect backdrop for a glass or two of the superb local shiraz and cabernet sauvignon but winter is also truffle season. Combine a truffle hunt with a tasting at leading local wineries such as The Vintners Daughter (Dr Who fans, keep an eye out for the life-sized Tardis) or Lerida Estate. The Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region, home to hallowed wineries such as Tyrrell’s, Tulloch and Lindeman’s, but you will also find plenty of pioneering young winemakers among its 150 wineries. Sustainability is a key priority for operators such as the carbon-neutral Keith Tulloch winery and Krinklewood Biodynamic Wines.
