Sydney can get steamy in the summer but it always feels a bit fresher in the Southern Highlands. Just 120km south of the city, this is the closest major wine region to Sydney, home to more than 60 vineyards producing a wide range of cool-climate varietals. As the grapes slowly start to ripen expect to see workers busy in the vineyards, trimming the leaves to ensure the grapes get their share of sunlight. Head to Artemis Wines, where you can enjoy a wood-fired pizza or charcuterie board on the lawn, or to Centennial Vineyards, known for European varietals such as albarino and gruner veltliner. If you are hungry, the winery restaurant has a devoted following.
