Arguably the most picturesque beach in Perth is Cottesloe or ‘Cott’ to locals. It’s pretty as a picture and a favourite among both swimmers and surfers. But if you prefer to have a dip and linger leisurely nearby, you can do that too – Cottesloe is home to the landmark the Indiana Teahouse, which houses beachside eatery Indigo Oscar.

Fellow central suburbs resident City Beach is another of the most popular (and best) beaches in Perth. Within arm’s reach of the CBD, this iconic destination offers easy access to the sand, crystalline waters for cooling off in, and grassy stretches for stretching out on with the whole family. Set up by the flags on the northern end, or enjoy a bit more solitude on the south side of the groyne.

Or take a dip at Scarborough; close proximity to the CBD makes this place one of the most popular swimming holes, especially with the younger crowds. It’s surfers that tend to flock to the regular swell and decent breaks here, but swimmers will find a friend here too. Post-dip, wander the beachside promenade, a stretch of cafes, restaurants, bars, and an open-air cinema.

Nudging Fremantle Port (and its many cranes), Port Beach is slightly more industrial in its location, but that makes it no less beautiful a swimming destination. Calm, shallow waters make this spot ideal for those with young ones in tow. There’s a neighbouring coastal path too, popular for walking or cycling with sea views.

The 1.5 km long Leighton Beach is the leading family-friendly option. Sheltered waters and snorkelling potential make it an easy spot for a swim. It’s also not shy of green spaces for the kids to run around – picture picnic tables and playgrounds scattered across ample lawn. If you’re a dog owner you’ll also be pleased to hear that the north side of this sandy stretch is also dog-friendly.

If you’re a surfer (or would like to be), you’ll no doubt consider Trigg to be one of Perth’s best beaches. It’s a beach break, favoured by short boards, but its regular swell promises entertainment for the intermediate. But there’s swimming to be had here too – though it’s better for the confident thanks to the more rugged conditions. Work up a sweat pre-dip along the Trigg Bushland Reserve loop, a 3.4km bushwalk along rugged coastline.

Neighbouring Trigg Beach is Bennion Beach, a small but mighty swimming destination that deserves just as much attention as one of the best beaches in Perth. Sandwiched between Limestone Cliffs, it’s sheltered from the wind and makes for a great place to sit in the sun or swim on a hot day. Plus, it’s another dog-friendly option.

A sandy stretch with more than its fair share of history is an apt way to describe Bathers Beach. Also known as ‘Whalers Beach’ this place is intertwined with Fremantle’s heritage (and whaling history in particular). These days it’s just a nice place to enjoy a swim, or take in the sunset; to enjoy it with a cocktail in hand drop by local institution Bathers Beach House.

Just like Sydney, Perth can lay claim to a Coogee Beach. But WA’s Coogee has its own ship wreck; Omeo is the city’s only snorkel-friendly wreck, and can be explored alongside the accompanying Coogee Maritime Trail. The very still swimming spot also offers its visitors access to the Coogee Jetty if you’re keen to throw in a line.

The flat water of South Beach tempts swimmers from all over Perth. It’s nearby Rottnest Island which acts as wind and swell buffer, making the destination an easy way to while away the day by the sea. A basketball court, playground, dog-friendly section, and cluster of cafes make this sandy stretch one of the best beaches in Perth.

A natural rock pool fringed by reef but accessible from shore, Mettams Pool is a dreamy addition to Perth’s best beaches. Don’t forget your snorkel when you visit – the coral-laden lagoon is ripe with marine life and the waters tranquil enough to tempt families in their droves.

A neighbour of City Beach, Floreat is another popular park and sand combination, particularly among families. Pull up a pew at the handful of undercover barbecues that litter the shoreline here (there’s a playground too), or stick to swimming in the crystal clear waters out front. But be aware – this beach is not patrolled.

On the northern fringe of Perth is where Burns Beach sits. The rugged beach is as well-regarded for its natural beauty as it is the trails which sit alongside – this is where the Perth-Peel coastal walk begins, a 12-day trail if you want to complete it in its entirety.

Among the best beaches in Perth, it’s C.Y.O’Connor that the dog lovers would vote for as leader of the pack. An endless sandy stretch welcoming four-legged friends, it’s welcoming of both dog walkers and swimmers alike. There’s also the remnants of the hull of an old steam boat (the SS Wyola) tucked into the sand to explore.
