There are barely any clouds in Perth’s sky. As one of the world’s most sun-drenched cities – with an average of eight hours sunlight, year round – a near permanent canopy of royal blue drapes Western Australia’s capital. With such an idyllic climate, it’s no wonder the city’s identity is so closely linked to its rugged coastline and white sandy beaches. Here are five of the best. Words by Rosa Brennan.
With its feathery white sand, sparkling turquoise water and iconic stretch of cafes and bars, including the much-loved Cottesloe Beach Hotel, it’s not difficult to see why this is Perth’s ‘poster girl’ beach. If you’re visiting in March, don’t miss Sculpture by the Sea, an international exhibition of huge art installations on the sand.
Just 15 minutes from Perth’s CBD, City Beach offers a huge stretch of white sand, expansive ocean vistas and a coastline dotted with laid-back eateries. There’s also a big grassed area and playground for kids, plus ample parking. Clancy’s Fish Pub, a friendly gastro-pub perched at the northern end of the beach, is a great spot for post-swim refueling with a tempting selection of seafood dishes, classic pub meals, local wine and beer.
Located north of Fremantle, Port Beach has a quieter, more relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere in comparison to other popular Perth beaches such as glamorous Cottesloe and exuberant Scarborough. In the summer its clean white sand, sparkling crystal clear water and gentle waves breaking across a shallow sand bank make Port Beach a delight for families. With its absolute beachfront location, Coast at Port Beach is a popular place for sunset beers or family get togethers, with the water just a few strides away.
While not technically in Perth, it would be a shame to miss this local-favourite, just a speedy 25-minute ferry ride from Perth to the picturesque island of Rottnest. With its shallow clear waters and stunning rock formations, The Basin is an underwater snorkelling playground – perfect for families and just ten minutes from the main settlement.
This naturally protected bay in Perth’s northern suburbs offers interesting snorkelling, with shallow access to leafy sea grasses and intricately patterned fish, starfish and octopuses. Its calm waters are great for families, kids learning to swim, or simply those after a tranquil ocean splash without the waves. For the area’s best coffee, go to Yelo just up the road – a popular spot for surfers, families and post-beach goers – to decompress with an iced coffee or smoothie.
