If you want to be right in the action then this is the spot for you. You’ll find Ta-Ra Park on the southern side of the harbour, right under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Bradfield Highway. Considered one of the best vantage points in the city, Hickson Rd Reserve is completely free to whoever wants to brave the crowds. The venue opens at 9am and a couple years back reached capacity at 3pm so you won’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to get a spot, but if you want to get a ‘good’ spot you’ll need to be early. Ok, hear us out. You need to brave the chaos and see the fireworks from the best vantage point in the city at least once. Access to the viewing areas at Sydney Opera House open at 7.00am NYE and you will probably need to get there then to nab a spot. If you want great views but don’t want to be around loads of people, McKell Park is a good option with a capacity of just 1,000 people. The small, open foreshore location offers views of the city and Sydney Harbour Bridge. You won’t be able to buy food here, so pack a picnic. Here you’ll be treated to views of the western side of the Harbour Bridge and with two firework barges just off the foreshore a decent display of fireworks will be on show. Sandwiched between The Rocks and Sydney Opera House, East Circular Quay offers some of the best views of the Bridge fireworks, but you’ll have to sacrifice views of the Sydney Opera House because of its location.
