Sure Australia is home to an impressive bevy of quality vineyards. There are those with sweeping views, with acclaimed restaurants, and with impressive art collections. And now there is one in Victoria which can proudly claim all three. Pt Leo Estate is the latest addition to Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and opens its doors October 25.

Sitting between seaside villages Merricks Beach and Shoreham, the vineyard has 180 degree views of surrounding Western Port Bay. 100 head of Black Angus cattle also call the vineyard home, alongside a veggie garden, chickens, bees, 50 acres of vines and (thankfully) a cellar door.

The Sculpture Park that forms a part of the grounds contain more than 40 large-scale pieces of art to enjoy that have been curated by Geoffrey Edwards, the former director of Geelong Gallery. “It’s been landscaped from scratch as a sculpture park and it’s the only one on the coast with a spectacular panorama. Internationally, the notion of established vineyards adding outdoor sculpture has become something of a new cultural genre but rarely has this been achieved with the same single-minded vision and on such a glorious site.”

The menus will both focus on the bounty of spoils of the surrounding fertile region. “The food concept is about promoting the region and where possible using what is available to us in a seasonal way,” says Phil. “We are trying to make it unfussy but very flavoursome, where everything has a purpose. There is no unnecessary embellishment that doesn’t provide a certain flavour or work with core produce. Hero ingredients will be elevated and not overshadowed.”

Dishes will include the likes of this beetroot pancake dressed and lemon curd with Yarra Valley trout roe.

Joining Phil Wood as a part of the key hospitality team is veteran Ainslie Lubbock as Restaurant Manager, Joel Alderson as Senior Sous Chef and Andrew Murch as Head Sommelier.

Renowned Melbourne-based architectural, landscape and interiors company Jolson spent three years on the design and build of the cellar door and restaurant. It’s intended to be a community space. “We want the general public to leave the property resonating with a quintessential Victorian coastal experience of engaging with an established vineyard that is celebrated by significant local and international arts and culture,” explains the firm.

Visitors are welcome and able to take self-guided walking tours of the grounds. There are two winding serpentine paths guests can follow – one is a 90 minute stroll, and the other 40 minutes.The sculpture park is accessible for a small fee of $10 per person with diners complimentary.
