This bustling city has much to offer the intrepid traveller. Sarah Lewis packs food, markets and museums into one culture-filled day.

9am. Breakfast like a Berliner.
Start the day at Cafe Einstein, where waistcoated waiters and brass and marble fixtures offer a glimpse into the city’s past. Dine on soft rolls with apricot jam and an expertly pulled kaffee. 58 Kurfürstenstrasse.

10am. Forage in the food hall
Stroll KaDeWe (21-24 Tauentzienstrasse, Kurfurstendamm) to ogle cheese, smoked meats and fish, cakes and other delights in the food hall. Or for fashion head to Mulackstrasse and Mitte’s Torstrasse, which are lined with boutiques.

11am. Visit the Holocaust memorial
Just south of the Brandenburg Gate in Friedrichstadt, the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe is a staggering space of 2711 concrete slabs spread over two hectares. it will take your breath away – for all the wrong reasons.

12pm. Bow down to Bauhaus
If you have time, be sure to take a spin around Bauhaus-Archiv museum to recognise the game-changing design styles of the Bauhaus masters on modern architecture and furniture. 14 Klingelhöferstrasse.

1pm. Cheap eats in the east
Scoot over to Prater Garten for lunch (7-9 Kastanienallee). This summer-only beer garden is a great place to enjoy a stein and a platter of porky goodness. For a year-round sausage fix, head for currywurst at Konnopke’s Imbiss (Schönhauser Allee).

2.30pm. Mauerpark flea market
Walk off lunch with a stroll to Mauerpark. witness crumbling, graffiti-graced stretches of The wall and, on Sundays, scour the retro-fabulous flea market, or sing along to the open-air karaoke.

4.30pm. Take a dip at Badeschiff
See and be seen at Badeschiff, a pool that juts out over the River Spree, with sun decks, loungers, a bar and dJs. 4 Eichenstrasse, Treptow.

7pm. Doner or steak dinner
Visit the birthplace of the doner kebab at Hasir (10 Adalbertstrasse), a casual eatery in central Kreuzberg. Or for something more refined, visit the handsome steakhouse Grill Royal (105b Friedrichstrasse).

10pm. Smart sips at Tausend
Berlin’s reputation as a party capital is well deserved, offering everything from hole-in-the-wall haunts to warehouse raves. Try out Tausend, where you’ll find luscious cocktails and clubby tunes. 11 Schiffbauerdamm.

12am. Sleep at Soho House
