Etihad is taking a chomp of the Big Apple. Words by James Booth.
As of the 22nd of April 2024, the UAE-based carrier will start flying its double-decker A380s from Abu Dhabi to JFK Airport in New York. This will have luxury lovers pricking up their ears (and rubbing their hands together with the prospect of breakfast in bed), as the A380 is home to The Residence, one of, if not the fanciest first class (they call it better than first class) offerings in the skies on a commercial airline (it’s the world’s only three-room suite in the sky, and serves up a legendary flying experience complete with bedroom, lounge and bathroom).

How often will it fly?
The A380 will operate on one of the two daily Etihad flights from Abu Dhabi to New York. The other daily flight, sans The Residence experience, will be operated by a 787-9 featuring First, Business and Economy cabins.
Thanks to this upcoming addition of the A380, New York will become the second destination after London to enjoy the remarkable A380 experience since Etihad returned its superjumbo to the skies.

What’s so special about The Residence?
The Residence accommodates up to two guests and features a private living room, bedroom, and ensuite bathroom, complete with a shower at 40,000 feet. It’s also a foodie’s dream, boasting an à la carte menu (think: champagne, caviar, high tea), served on designer tableware in the private living room (or, if you prefer, you can opt for breakfast in bed). A dedicated team of Etihad cabin crew ensures top-notch service.

What’s so special about Etihad’s A380s?
Etihad’s double-decker A380s are popular because their massive size gives the airline licence to add flourishes you just don’t see on smaller aircraft. Etihad’s A380s have 68 extra legroom economy seats, 337 economy smart seats, 70 business studios, an upstairs lobby, a serviced lounge and bar area, nine first-class apartments, a first-class shower room and – of course – The Residence.
Why is Etihad doing this?
There are three main reasons. Firstly: to boost capacity in the wake of increased customer demand. Secondly, to grow the airline’s expanding network worldwide (Etihad also has a new route to Boston opening on the 31st of March, three weeks before the A380 starts flying to New York). Thirdly, the new route is projected to increase visitors to Abu Dhabi (and make for a more seamless connection between the UAE and the USA).

What’s happening in celebration of the launch?
To pop the proverbial champagne cork on the occasion, Etihad is offering a special promotion*. Starting from 10,999 AED (4,531 AUD), guests can upgrade from a first-class ticket to The Residence for the experience of a lifetime.
*Special offer available until 12 December, 2023, upgrade for 10,999 AED for one person or 14,999 AED for two, one-way. Available on travel from 22 April, 2024 (excluding 14 – 24 June, 2024). The standard The Residence upgrade fare between Abu Dhabi and New York is 16,600 AED per person, one-way.
