Do as the Romans do.

If you love Italian food you have probably already devoured every episode of Tucci in Italy, the latest season of Stanley Tucci’s National Geographic food documentary. While you could plan a whole trip around Italy based on the places and restaurants Tucci visits, you don’t have to. One of the best sandwiches Tucci has ever had is in the very heart of the Lazio region, aka Rome.

In episode 5, Season 2, Tucci shows us where to find this sandwich. He explains how he stumbled upon this small eatery at the end of a two month stint shooting a major motion picture in the Eternal City in 2024. And the name of said eatery? Circoletto.

Just a 13 minute walk from the Colesseum, Circoletto is right in the thick of the city. It’s run by the Tracastelli brothers, Nicolo and Manuel. It’s a simple sandwich – smoked tongue, Roman lettuce, gherkin, homemade mustard mayonnaise – but as Tucci says, it’s an “explosion of flavour.”

“From the eggs to the Roman lettuce, they are all products you can find here in the market,” explains the Tracastelli brothers on Tucci in Italy. “Everything Lazio has to offer is inside.” So you’re really getting a taste of the region in just one bite.

Circoletto is a casual eatery that specialises in natural wines and small plates, so it’s the perfect spot for an aperitivo. If you’re visiting in summer,  be sure to get in early and nab an outdoor table so you can look out on to Circo Massimo – the remains of a stone and marble arena that could once seat 250,000 Romans for chariot races. Belissimo!
