When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Finding maritozzi in Rome is easy. Finding good maritozzi in Rome is not. Not familiar with maritozzi? The sweet treat is the Eternal City’s most iconic pastry. Brioche buns scented with orange zest, vanilla and honey, sliced in half and filled with whipped cream can be found on the menu of most coffee shops and restaurants, especially around tourist attractions. But don’t fall into the trap of ordering from any place you stumble upon. If you want to bite into the best maritozzi in Rome make a beeline for Bar Farnese.

The coffee bar has been serving espresso, aperitivo and maritozzi to locals and tourists alike for more than 100 years. Located just steps from the Campo de’ Fiori piazza, Bar Farnese is a true local haunt. Angelo, the owner, has been working here since 1956 and still serves customers today. Immaculately dressed, usually in a blazer and slacks, Angelo can be found working the espresso machine, assembling maritozzi or charming customers with his softly spoken voice.

Bar Farnese is by no means a fancy establishment. The unassuming spot is adorned with a decades old sign and is small, with just a few tables and chairs set up inside and outside. It’s a little worn around the edges but packed with old-school Roman charm. While you can pick up a panini or croissant here, you can’t stop by without trying the maritozzi. Bar Farnese’s maritozzi is a stand out because of its perfectly cooked brioche bun – soft, slightly sweet and zesty – which is perfectly balanced with freshly-made whipped cream. Bellissimo!
