This caffeinated viral sensation is a must try on your next visit to the Tuscan capital.

Florence is no stranger to its local delicacies becoming internet sensations. All’Antico Vinaio’s toasted schiacciate has to be some of the most photographed sandwiches in the world. But there’s a new viral sensation coming out of Florence, thanks to a recent Instagram post by Sam Youkilis (@samyoukilis).

The fashion photographer uploaded a carousel of ‘the best affogato’ and said affogato has since flooded our feeds. Many TikTok creators have gone as far as to try to recreate it at home. So what makes this specific affogato so special?

Vivoli Gelateria is the brains behind the affogato. In fact, they don’t even call it an affogato. You’ll have to order a Gran Crema Caffè if you want to get a taste of what Sam had.

The family-run coffee shop and ice-cream parlour in Florence dates back to the 1930s. It spreads delicious creamy gelato into a pre-chilled cappuccino cup, leaving a square in the centre. The coffee cup is then placed under the nozzle of a coffee machine and espresso flows directly into the hollowed out square in the gelato. It is then placed on a saucer that is lined with the gelateria’s signature blue and white doily.

It is estimated that Vivoli Gelateria serves approximately 350 affogato a day. The popular shop is just a two minute walk from the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, so it’s right in the heart of the city making it easy to find. Just be prepared to line-up, especially if visiting during peak season.
