Contrary to popular belief, there’s more to San Sebastian than pretty white beaches and endless stretches of clear blue sky. There’s also food – and it’s amazing. Known for its unusually high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants, the Basque region loves its food – and Matt Preston does, too.
1. The best ever poached egg with peppers at Arzak.
2. The kokotxas (hake throats) and the grilled turbot at Kai-e in Getaria.
3. The slice of compressed chard leaves with stickiest glossy beef jus and lump of aged local idiazabel (bitey, hard but crumbly sheep’s cheese) at Mugaritz.
4. Txuleta (rib eye) at Bar Nestor in the old town.
5. The creamy “burnt” cheesecake at La Vina in the old town.
