The horror! You can now dine at the iconic house from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

It’s a near-death experience that comes with a side of shrimp and grits.

There’s nothing like a blood-soaked horror flick to help you work up an appetite. All that wracking of nerves and screaming of “don’t go in there!” burns a lot of energy. So a horror film-themed restaurant sounds like a great idea, right? Right?

Laugh nervously if you must, but as Grandpa Sawyer once said, “There’s just some things you gotta do”. Which means horror fans can now sate their appetite for both slasher flicks and chicken-fried steak at Hooper’s in Kingsland, Texas. The casual Southern eatery is housed in the Sawyer family home from the cult classic horror film, 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The house was previously located at the original filming location in Round Rock, Texas, but was moved and restored in its new Kingsland home in the 1990s. New owners recently took over, opening the restaurant in January of this year. They named it ‘Hooper’s’ after Tobe Hooper, Texas Chainsaw Massacre screenwriter and director.

On the menu, you can find meals including Hitchhiker’s Grilled Chicken and Chicken Slaughter Sandwich, as well as cocktails like No One Lives Forever and The Ripper. Staff dressed as Leatherface are on hand to pose for photos, and you can even dine at the Sawyer family table featured in the film. Because who doesn’t want to think about cannibalism while they’re tucking into a juicy burger?

Clearly it’s not for everyone. Neither are horror films (give me a good dramedy anyday). But since the restaurant went viral in a TikTok post, it’s been making, well, a killing. The food’s not too bad either, by all reports.

So if you are hitchhiking your way through Texas and manage to survive unscathed, Hooper’s is well worth the visit. But just in case there are any chainsaw-wielding maniacs lurking about, it’s probably best not to ask anyone to carve your steak at the table.
