A secluded Aegean retreat where elemental design, restorative wellness and profound privacy redefine the modern Greek escape, One&Only Kéa Island makes a striking proposition for holistic luxury.
Driving along Kéa’s craggy, ochre cliffside in a chauffeur-driven Defender, with nothing but Greece’s infinite blues stretching ahead, I am struck by a growing sense of remove. The journey from the port takes longer than expected, but that, it seems, is part of the One&Only charm: unearthing pockets of paradise that sit just beyond the reach of the typical traveller—remote, quietly magnificent and all the more compelling for the small effort it takes to arrive.
Just a short, 45-minute ferry from Athens yet feeling a world away, Kéa, or “Tzia” in Greek, is an idyllic paradise almost no one has heard of. Part of the Cycladic archipelago yet strikingly different to its blue-and-white equivalents, this fertile yet rugged jewel was renowned in antiquity for its cultural and intellectual life, set within a landscape of oak and olive covered hills, colourful hamlets and shimmering sapphire sea. Untamed, underdeveloped and refreshingly authentic, it is a natural fit for One&Only.

An island first approach
Like all properties within the portfolio, this outpost takes its cues from its locale. Deeply connected to its location and community, it’s truly a hotel of place — from excavating the land in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and local archaeologist Petroula Tatsopoulou to utilising stones only from the island — One&Only Kéa captures and preserves the island’s history, landscape and culture respectfully and beautifully.
What strikes me after sitting down with its General Manager, Jerome Colson, is that this goes beyond location. So genuinely enamoured with the island, Colson speaks less like a hotelier and more like a proud local: he has hiked its ancient trails, swum in all of its beaches and is unwavering in his vision for the hotel to draw everything it can from Kea itself — from the food on the table to the knowledge, skills and lived expertise of the people who call it home. The result is a powerful sense of identity, stewardship and connection.

Stone, salt air & stillness
Hanging dramatically from the cliffs on the island’s rugged western coast, One&Only Kéa is less a hotel than a slow exhale. This is Greece stripped of cliché and returned to something elemental: stone, salt air, stillness and space to recalibrate.
Nowhere is this more evident than at the resort’s main building. Perched at the highest point of the property, it feels like a temple prized from Ancient Greece, recast—spectacularly—for the modern day. Imagined by John Heah, the man behind Amman, Four Seasons and the Maybourne Group, expressions of classical antiquity are ubiquitous yet discreet; traditional techniques were used to fashion natural materials like locally sourced stone, wood and marble into a minimalist masterpiece. With immaculate indoor gardens, a sculptural water feature and striking open-air ceiling, light seeps in from every corner, as does the warm Aegean breeze. There’s a sense of being outside even when you’re in, a feeling that carries throughout the resort, from its lobby to its villas.

Scattered across the cliffside like contemporary Cycladic dwellings, its 63 villas are low-slung and discreet, designed to blend into Kéa’s terrain rather than dominate it. Pale marble, natural timber, blue linen, soft curves and expanses of glass frame the Aegean at every turn. Along with every luxurious amenity you could think of — palatial king-size bed, double-vanity, bathtub, sunken daybed — each villa comes with its own infinity pool. Suspended above the sea, hours slip by in a state of sun-drenched disbelief — waking up here feels almost unreal. And while it’s hard to pry yourself away from your own private sanctuary, it’s worth it for One&Only’s endless experiences.
Wellbeing taken seriously
Wellbeing here is not performative, instead, it is woven quietly into the rhythm of the stay. There’s an invitation to slow down at every turn, but nowhere is this more evident than in the resort’s Spa. Spanning three expansive levels, it is the largest in the One&Only portfolio — a stunning, temple-like sanctuary dedicated to wellbeing. Beautiful treatment rooms, lush outdoor relaxation areas and steam and sauna facilities complete the space, yet the true showpiece is the breathtaking indoor–outdoor pool, which cinematically overlooks the sea.

Guided by the Greek principle of sophrosyne, treatments lean restorative rather than trend-driven. Four signature therapies, created exclusively with Australian skincare brand Subtle Energies, blend Cycladic influences with ancient Ayurvedic wisdom (and ingredients from the island such as pomegranate enzymes and wild turmeric). The result is a deeply intuitive, ultra-luxurious programme — think grounding massages, tension-releasing bodywork and facial rituals that balance body and mind. Throughout the season, visiting wellness practitioners also offer personalised therapies, yoga and meditation, sound baths and gong healing alongside its wonderful fixed wellness offerings like WatSu (water Shiatsu) and aromatherapy.
A side-step away from the serenity is Club One, a swish indoor-outdoor fitness playground. With a state-of-the-art seafront fitness centre (including an alfresco spin studio with arguably the best spin view in the world), personal training, padel and tennis courts and e-biking, it’s impossible not to feel totally invigorated. To restore a sense of calm, yoga is offered in a tranquil pavilion that (again) offers the most breathtaking vistas while you downward dog.

Of course, the property is vast, so an efficient buggy service — arranged by your personal concierge — is the preferred mode of transport. As I glide down vertiginous roads, it’s hard not to be in awe. Every spot commands a view; whether you’re playing padel or sipping a Tzia Negroni, take-you-breath-away panoramas reveal themselves at every turn.
Island to table
One of the best, though, is at Kosmos Lobby Bar at sunset. One of four bars, it serves superb Greek-inspired cocktails against one of the most spectacular sunsets in the world. At Atria, the hotel’s main restaurant, elevated Greek cuisine takes centre stage. Dedicated to local, seasonal produce, the menu showcases fish fresh from Kéa’s waters, meat from nearby farmers and homegrown herbs and produce. Highlights include organic charcoal-grilled pork chops, tender octopus set on silky fava and orzo with shrimp. After dinner, whisky enthusiasts should seek out Incognito Speakeasy, a discreet hideaway that blends Cuban glamour with Mediterranean mystery, while Èpicora Wine Bar offers a more contemplative close — a celebration of refined viticulture and quiet sophistication.

There’s also an exceptional breakfast service, which offers à la carte options like avocado toast with grilled kale and Greek favourites like Kayianas, scrambled eggs with tomato, feta and oregano. But its buffet is particularly brilliant. An ode to the plateia, or the Greek village square, it pays tribute to the beating heart of local community life with One&Only flair; perfect pastries sit under glass cloches in one house, while Kea delicacies like loza, salted smoked pork, and xerotiri, local aged cow’s milk cheese sit alongside fruit, cereals and breads in the other.
Given its private beachfront locale, days are best spent drifting between thatched loungers and perfect, crystalline water. Set within the natural shelter of Vroskopos Bay, it’s largely protected from the Meltemi, or summer winds, making it the ultimate swimming spot. Snacks and drinks can be ordered directly to the sand, though lunch at the exceptionally chic Bond Beach Club is a must. Under the shade of tamarind trees, beautifully prepared and theatrically presented Mediterranean dishes are lifted by Asian notes — think yuzu-infused sea bass ceviche and elegant fish tacos — accompanied by Greek rosé to rival its French counterparts. As evening falls, the mood shifts: the DJ takes over, the sun sinks into the sea and barefoot dancing in the sand becomes the only way to end the day.

What truly defines One&Only Kéa is its deeply personalised approach to luxury. Each stay is shaped entirely by the guest: you can disappear if you choose, retreating into the privacy of your villa, or embark on scenic hikes to ancient cities and deep-sea dives to hidden shipwrecks, taste thyme honey with local beekeepers or take yacht trips to pristine coves. Luxury reveals itself through considered, curated adventures both on land and at sea, and on and off the property. Service is, of course, impeccable, and also personalised. An extension of the Greek concept of filoxenia, it is attuned to the individual rather than routine.
Departing the island, it becomes clear that One&Only Kéa’s greatest gift is not its polish or its service, but the rare and elusive pleasure of feeling restored, rejuvenated and lighter. Like a Hellenic dreamscape, it feels both surreal and grounding — which makes leaving the hardest part.
