This dreamy stay is steeped in tradition and dripping with luxury.

In May 2023, one of Mexico’s most beloved luxury retreats is set to open its doors again. After an extensive transformation, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, in Riviera Maya, has finally revealed the fruits of its labour.

So what’s new? There are an additional 10 waterfront suites that sit on the secluded white sands of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the launch of Latin America’s first Guerlain Spa and a gastronomic era led by Mexican-born executive chef Daniel Camacho.

Internationally renowned designer, Tara Bernerd, is the creative mind behind the restoration. Honouring Mexican heritage, Tara worked with local artisans and carefully sourced indigenous materials to create timeless spaces that are authentic to their roots.

Returning guests will be thrilled to hear that the original design and architecture of the property has been preserved, including the signature white stucco buildings, aligned to the Sacred Geometry of Mayan masonry. The hotel’s three pools have also had a makeover and feature Sukambi tiles hand-made from volcanic stone.

With the surrounding nature and location at the forefront of all Maroma do, the lush hotel welcomes a new era of wellness that focuses on nature and vitality. The Guerlain Spa – a first of its kind in Latin America – encourages guests to connect with the healing nature of the surrounding jungle and sea through treatments designed around Mayan wellness philosophy of sound and healing rituals. No true holistic wellness sanctuary is complete without meditation, movement and yoga workshops, all of which are on offer daily.

When it comes to dining Maroma has stayed true to its roots by celebrating the country’s rich culinary diversity at Casa Mayor restaurant. Local chef Daniel Camacho will source 90% of ingredients from Mexico and almost half from Yucatan peninsula. Colourful dishes will range from seafood towers and Michoacan corundas (a type of tamale), to Jalisco-style Birria (a slow-cooked stew) and chocolate cake with Oaxacan black mole, flamed with house mezcal. Guests will be able to get a taste for local cuisine just steps from their room.

So if you’re planning on escaping Australia winter in 2023, this one’s for you.
