Could this Greek island be the perfect family getaway?

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos may not be the first place you think of when planning a family holiday. It has a reputation for being an expensive party island with countless bars and clubs. While the expensive part is correct, there is also a side of Mykonos that is very family friendly. Words by Lindy Lawler

Days spent meandering the rabbit warren-like streets, sipping frappuccinos under flowing bougainvillaea trees, resting in hidden cafes overlooking the sea, or visiting family-friendly beach clubs means your time in Mykonos will be filled with such bliss that you can’t wait to return.

Here are some of the things you should do to immerse yourself in Mykonos’ laid-back vibe.

Meander the streets of Mykonos Town

The rabbit warren that is Mykonos Town is filled with a plethora of family-friendly restaurants, bars, cafes and boutiques. It’s still possible to navigate a pram in these streets but take it slow because some of them may be crowded with people stopping to admire the flowing bougainvillea or the whitewashed houses with their blue doors. Begin your meandering near the southern bus station, and take a slow stroll through the winding streets. Stop at café Rhapsody located close to the shore, offering spectacular views of the Windmills of Kato Mili while you sip your frappucino.

Have dinner at Avra

Enjoying a meal together is one of the highlights of a family holiday. Avra, located in Mykonos Town, is set in a romantic, secluded courtyard garden adorned with cacti, candles, and colourful bougainvillaea. It’s under the bougainvillaea (and also on the rooftop terrace) where guests dine on dishes created by Chef Nikos. Order the roast lamb, with fresh garlic and rosemary, or sample the bacon wrapped in grilled Cypriot cheese. Kids will love the burger and pasta menu, and adults can sip on cocktails and a range of wines in a secluded spot, away from the bustling streets of Mykonos Town.

Watch the sunset

Pick up an ice cream (or another frappucino), grab a seat, and get ready for the show. The large set of stairs next to the parking lot offers a gorgeous panoramic view of the Windmills of Kato Mili, the neighbouring islands, and Mykonos’ quintessential Little Venice complete with water lapping onto the traditional buildings. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun sink into the sea from the pink sky, but you’ll need to get there early – plenty of tourists will have the same idea.

Head to a beach club

You may think the beach clubs in the Greek Islands are notorious for drunken parties and bad pick-up lines, but that’s not the case at Ornos. Located on the north of the island, Pasaji Beach Club is a family-friendly beach club nestled on Ornos Beach, next to Kuzina restaurant. Pick up some doughnuts from the doughnut sellers walking the beach, and plop the family down at one of the affordable daybeds. Wi-Fi is free, so you can post those sun-kissed selfies in real time.

Other beach club options include Kahlua Beach Club, Scorpio’s and Principote, but if you visit these clubs, here’s a tip: bring loads of euros.

Eat Souvlaki from Jimmy’s

The flavoursome gyros at Jimmy’s are world-famous. The cramped little eatery – with indoor seating across the road, and al-fresco seating outside that threatens to fall into the street at any time – serves up some of the most delicious street food on the island. Spend an hour and a few euros here munching on the chicken and pork gyros, and don’t forego ordering the fries with salt and oregano.
