Liked the Ghibli Museum? You’ll love this.
Just in time for the return of unimpeded travel to Japan, the long-awaited Ghibli Park is preparing to throw open its gates on November 1. But this isn’t your typical theme park.
In place of rollercoasters, visitors can expect a 5.2m Totoro sculpture, a plush cat bus and a sky garden watched over by a giant robot. The Ghibli Museum in outer Tokyo has long been a pilgrimage for fans of the iconic film studio co-founded by anime auteur Miyazaki Hayao, but will be dwarfed in size by the new complex.

The director’s son, Miyazaki Gorō, has helped bring the Studio Ghibli universe to life at a leafy former World Expo site outside Nagoya City, three hours from Tokyo by high-speed rail.
The initial opening will encompass three mini worlds. Dondoko Forest has grown up around a beloved replica of Satsuki and Mei’s house originally created for the 2005 expo. Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse is the gift store of your geeky dreams, full of studio merch and paraphernalia. And Hill Of Youth sets the scene for young love, inspired by Whisper of the Heart.

Two more zones will follow over the next two years – Mononoke Village, which evokes Emishi Village and Irontown from the 1997 classic; and Valley of Witches, magicking up the worlds of Kiki’s Delivery Service and Howl’s Moving Castle.
