Our favourite place to stock up on delicious treats that you can’t get in Australia? New Zealand. Some of our favourite lollies, chocolates, biscuits and ice-creams can only be found across the ditch. Here are our top picks of snacks to try on your next trip to New Zealand.

Featuring a smooth, slightly chewy artificial banana marshmallow centre covered in a thin layer of Cadbury milk chocolate, the Cadbury Perky Nana is a chocolate bar that’s completely unique to New Zealand. The centre is a similar consistency to chewy caramel, and the flavour combination of banana and chocolate is definitely a winner. The Perky Nana chocolate bar was created by Cadbury and is still produced in their Dunedin factory. They’ve since released Perky Nana lumps, which are a bite sized version of the popular treat.

Jelly Tip were first created in 1951, by ice cream manufacturer Tip Top. The aim was to combine two treats Kiwis love: creamy vanilla ice cream and raspberry flavoured jelly. And voila! More than 70 years later you have one of New Zealand’s most beloved cold snacks. Fun fact: Many wonder how Tip Top keep the jelly from falling off the stick and the producer has never revealed its secret.

Sure, they’re not the most visually appealing snack, but they’re 100% pure New Zealand and incredibly more-ish. Pineapple Lumps are small, bite-sized lollies that feature a slightly crispy, thin chocolate shell, and a pleasant faux pineapple centre. The pale yellow centre is both chewy and fluffy. It’s difficult to describe, but lands somewhere between solid caramel and dried fruit. Pineapple Lumps are definitely a unique experience, there’s nothing else like them in the world.

Short for Lemon & Paeroa, this sweet soft drink is a Kiwi icon. Originally made with lemon juice and sparkling mineral water, it’s now made and bottled by the Coca Cola company. L&P has a distinctive “lemony but not lemonade” flavour that makes it a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Besides, you’ve got to respect a whip-smart, tongue-in-cheek slogan like “World famous in New Zealand”.

Created by Kiwi entrepreneur Les Saussey, who started selling popcorn and potato chips at the Western Springs Speedway in Auckland back in 1947, Bluebird potato chips are made exclusively with New Zealand potatoes. The chips are thick, incredibly crunchy, crinkle cut chips, ideal for dipping and couch-potato related snacking. Although the brand makes a slew of flavours, including chicken, sour cream and chives, crispy bacon and green onion, it’s tough to go past their standout salt and vinegar flavour. And you’ve got to love the brand’s fun packaging, which features a surfing cartoon penguin.

Similar, but different (and also far superior) to Arnott’s Australian hundreds and thousands cookies, the Griffin’s Cookie Bear Hundreds and Thousands cookies are kind of like a super-charged cookie version of fairy bread. Featuring a circular vanilla biscuit covered in light pink icing and topped with rainbow sprinkles, these cookies are high on our list of favourites.

From looking at the packet it’s hard to know what you’re going to get with Poppa Jacks, but they are simply a delicious chicken-flavoured wheat-based chip and locals adore them.

Simply put, Fruju is like a fruit juice frozen on a stick. It’s the perfect cold snack for a hot summers day. And while it’s hard to top a Weiss Mango and Cream Bar, this one does come pretty close.

Whittaker’s Peanut Slab receives an honourary inclusion, mainly due to the fact that this old school chocolate creation is readily available in Australia. Packaged in eye-catching gold wrapping, the thick peanut and chocolate slab is gourmet confectionery at its best. Creamy, rich milk chocolate and savoury, salty peanuts are a match made in heaven. And while the chunky bar’s signature hard-to-bite-into consistency can be a little strange at first, there’s definitely nothing else like it.

Cookie Time cookies are produced by a family-owned Christchurch business and are iconic New Zealand snack. The original cookie is choc chip, but there’s a whole variety to choose from including The Apricot Chocolate Chunk, The Caramel Chocolate Chunk, The Macadamia White Chocolate Chunk Cookie and more. Perfect for those who have a sweet tooth.

A truly decadent sweet biscuit, Toffee Pops are consist of caramel toffee smothered in creamy milk chocolate all on a biscuit base.

These refreshing frozen fruit treats are made from 96% freshly pressed Nelson Tasman apples, then blended with delicious fruits and berries. And now, they’ve officially landed at Woolworths right here in Australia. (Not that that fact should stop you from heading across the Tasman.)

Ok, we know what you’re thinking. Yes, we do have Cheezels in Australia, but not all Cheezels are equal, especially to New Zealanders. Bluebird Cheezels reign supreme in New Zealand and as a tourist it’s fun to just compare the taste between the two. We’ll let you be the judge of which you prefer.
