Just steps away from the picturesque Canal Saint Martin, Le Comptoir Général is an out-of-the-ordinary bar set in an old barn. It labels itself a “temple dedicated to exoticism”, a “ghetto museum” and a “true urban amusement park”, housing a number of different rooms including a salon and a public library. The exotic, eclectic décor forms a kind of urban cabinet of curiosities, and the large bar on the ground floor fills up quickly, so make sure you get there early to nab a spot.

Ascending the dainty spiral staircase in a functioning laundromat near Republique, enter what feels like a true speakeasy: a bar with no signage, completely hidden from the street and situated in an unremarkable-looking apartment building. But once inside Le Levomatic, you can curl up on brightly-coloured pop art-style sofas or hang out on swings suspended from the back of the bar. To drink, try the Drunk in Love and the Healthy Mary Detox.

Literally translated as “the perch”, Le Perchoir is a hotspot for well-heeled Parisians and the kind of place you’ll want to linger all day. Situated in the cool northeast quarter of Menilmontant, the rooftop is decked out with fairy lights, day beds, cushions and the most heavenly view. Get there before 6pm to watch the sun-sink behind the Sacre-Coeur.

Tucked away behind a decrepit façade covered old band posters in the up-and-coming area near Gare du Nord, Le Syndicat is a true local’s haunt. The drinks list hits the fashionable vintage spot, boasting little-known liquors (cognacs, armagnacs, eau de vie and more). The crowd is young, hip and creative and so is the décor.

Beneath the buzzing neon sign off rue Saint Denis lies a sleek, modern Korean bar called Hero. The cocktail list is positively mouthwatering; think fun, fruit-forward tipples with a tinge of Eastern flavor including lychee, coconut, rose and tapioca pearls. When hunger strikes, head upstairs to the dining room to try a host of sticky-spicy South Korean specialties like extra crispy fried chicken, steamy pork buns, and kimchi mac ‘n’ cheese.

Located in the perennially trendy Marias precinct and owned by the same folks as Sketch London, Andy Wahloo is an intimate bar which takes kitsch to the enth degree. Try the exceptional Old Fashioned or the Mexican version, with a formidable mezcal from Oaxaca, and if you’re visiting in the warmer months don’t miss the laidback courtyard.
