Mouraria came about when the crusaders conquered Lisbon in 1147 and confined all Muslims to a small area beyond the city walls. This area became known as the Moorish quarter. A walking tour is a great way to learn more about Mouraria’s history – one of the few areas of the city to remain standing after a massive earthquake in 1755.

Multicultural Mouraria is accepted as one of the port neighbourhoods that led to the rise of fado – mournful and melodic music that has been captivating audiences since the 1820s. If you’re in town between June and the end of September, there are live outdoor fado concerts every Friday and Saturday. Check out the Fado Museum while you’re there.

Hand-painted tiles have been produced in Portugal for more than 500 years, and not just for decoration – they have also reflected the cultural, social and economic influences of the time. The facade of Mouraria’s Viúva Lamego building (once a factory, now a shop) is entirely decorated with figurative tiles. Handmade tiles and other ceramic objet d’art are for sale inside. Monte Agudo is one of Lisbon’s best-kept secrets, but the peaceful hilltop terrace is the place to go to watch the sun go down over the city. Sit under the pergola and enjoy the view, or enjoy snacks and drinks from the small, on-site cafe.
