Sometimes the most dazzling beaches are found a little off the beaten path. From the Algarve to the Azores, here are some of the best seaside hangouts Portugal has to offer.
Situated at one of the most westerly points of Europe, Praia de Cavaleiro hugs the ancient rock formations of the Costa Vicentina. This beautiful stretch of coastline is rich with plant and bird life, including storks building their nests in summer. For those keen of exploring further afield, the nearby Rota Vicentina contains more than 450km of fully marked walking and trekking routes.
Just south of Lisbon, this picturesque beach on Portugal’s Costa Azul (Blue Coast) certainly lives up to its namesake. Protected by cliffs dotted with wild rosemary, it remains off the radar due to its small size and steep descent, so it’s an ideal spot for those fond of skinny-dipping or the simple joy of escaping the crowds.
A small beach in the municipality of Lagoa on the Algarve coast, Praia do Cavalho is a beautiful sandy cove characterised by sandstone cliffs and sparkling blue waters. Access is through a tunnel, with steps hewn from sandstone. Come at low tide to laze on the sand and explore the cliffside riddled with caverns and more tunnels.
Located within the municipality of Aljezur on the Costa Vicentina, this sandy beach is sheltered by giant orange sandstone cliffs sloping down to the sea. The beach is a popular spot for surfers and body surfers to catch some waves. It’s also an ideal location to watch the sunset over the Atlantic while feasting on some fresh fish at the local seafood restaurant.
