For those with a penchant for Antiques Roadshow – or a passion for vintage – the Cat Street Markets, on Upper Lascar Row in Sheung Wan, offers a trove of curios. Sift through vintage fashion cast offs or find a rare piece of furniture from the Ming Dynasty. The side streets conceal smaller shops and a respite from the main thoroughfare.

The village of Lai Chi Wo – a measly 300 years old – has gone through a restoration after being entirely abandoned in the 1960s. A ferry ride from Ma Liu Shui Ferry Pier will get you straight to the village or, if a hike is more your speed, a two hour walk through the countryside and feng shui woods (at the back of the village) is a picturesque option. This well-preserved Hakka village has equal parts culture and ecology to suit the traveller who wants it all.

The LockCha Teahouse knows how to brew the perfect pot. Owner Wing-Chi Ip became a pioneer single-origin Chinese tea merchant in the 1980s and opened up shop in 1991. Tea devotees can while away the hours sipping tea sourced from all over China and munching on vegetarian dim sum.
