Have you heard of it?
It has a population under 5,000 and sits just 30 minutes outside of Canberra. Located in a picturesque valley in south-west NSW and a town many may not have heard of before, Bungendore has just taken out Gold in the Small Tourism Town category at Australia’s Top Tourism Towns 2025 awards.
Queanbeyan-Palerang Council Deputy Mayor Esma Livermore said, “This is a remarkable achievement for Bungendore and our region. The heart and soul of Bungendore are its people, and this national award is a well-deserved recognition of their dedication to creating memorable experiences for every visitor. We are incredibly proud to showcase the rich stories, artistry, and incredible hospitality that Bungendore is famous for on a national stage.”
The historic village, which dates back to 1837 is loved for its lovingly preserved colonial buildings, abundant farmer’s markets and cool climate wineries. Many original colonial buildings still stand, the highlights being The Old Stone House and The Carrington Inn.
Bungendore may be small, but it definitely overdelivers when it comes to food and wine. There are a number of great restaurants from Contentious Character, Scrumpers Kitchen and The George Bar and Dining. The small town is also home to Lark Hill Winery and is around the corn from Canberra District Wine region.

Deloraine, nestled in Tasmania’s Meander Valley, took Silver. And Airlie Beach in Queensland’s Whitsunday region scored Bronze in the Small Town category.
When it came to the Top Tourism Town Western Australia’s Fremantle took Gold, followed by Devonport in Tasmania and Kiama in NSW. Trentham in Victoria claimed Gold in the Tiny Tourism Town category with Husskisson in NSW taking Silver and Town of 1770 in Queensland awarded Bronze.
