A new era has dawned on the iconic hotel as it reopens after a luxury makeover, and we’re obsessed.

The InterContinental Sydney has revealed the results of a two-year, $120 million renovation, including one of the city’s best rooftop bars, and PSA – we’re moving in.

With Circular Quay practically on its doorstep, the InterContinental has long been an icon of the Harbour end of the city. In 2020 when the pandemic swept in and guests all but swept out, the InterContinental Group chose to find a silver lining and shut the doors to undergo a complete refurbishment, the results of which were revealed just this week.

Local firm Woods Bagot was brought on for a zhuzh of the entire property, including all 509 guest rooms, the lobby and three in-house dining and bar spaces. With respect to the hallowed history of the 1851 heritage-listed Treasury Building, the sumptuous design features natural hues of cool whites and marble to mimic the original sandstone and jewel tones of blue and green to mirror the views of the harbour and Royal Botanic Gardens that pour in from nearly every window.

And now, it’s not just guests who get to soak up those trillion-dollar scenes – for the first time, Aster Bar on level 32 is open to the general public. With a wrap-around balcony offering a vantage point from the Harbour Bridge out to Woolloomooloo and beyond, the chic space dripping in duck blue velvet sets the bar sky-high for summer sipping.
