Family in the UK? Visits might soon be cheaper, more eco-friendly and a whole lot faster.
The dreaded long-haul flight from Australia to the UK could become 80% shorter by 2030, according to The UK Space Agency.
On Tuesday, the organisation announced at the UK Space Conference that it will be working with the Australian Space Agency to make a four-hour flight between Sydney and London a reality in the 2030s. With the new engine underway, flight times from London to New York could be reduced to just one hour.
An engine named ‘The Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine’ or ‘SABRE’ designed by Oxfordshire’s Reaction Engines could be the catalyst that ensures travellers can get from the UK to Australia in the time it takes to watch a couple of movies. Reaction Engines are working on a hybrid hydrogen air-breathing rocket, that could propel the plane at more than twice the speed of Concorde.
Better yet, the SABRE engine is said to be more eco-friendly and more affordable than regular air travel. Trials are in the works now.
