Sydneysiders, you could score yourself a free train ride this week

Waldorf Astoria to open first Australian hotel in Sydney

Put your Opal cards away – you could ride the train for free as of Thursday due to the RTBU voting to shut down Opal card readers.

Another day, another chapter in the seemingly never ending battle between the NSW Government and The Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU).

The RTBU has notified officials that as of Thursday 20 October at 12.01am (AEDT) Opal card readers will be deactivated at the station gates on weekdays between the afternoon peak period of 3pm – 7pm.

This action will continue indefinitely, which means free train rides across the Sydney rail network for commuters, especially those who work nine to five days from the city. It’ll be music to the ears of Sydneysiders who have endured major train delays due to industrial strikes throughout the year.

Through this action the RTBU hopes to press the NSW Government to return to the negotiating table. Talks over pay and modifications to the new intercity fleet between the two parties came to a dramatic halt last month when the Government threatened to terminate existing labour agreements if industrial action continued.

If you’re looking to score yourself a free ride, be mindful that Opal poles will not be affected by this action and the NSW Government may take legal action before Thursday to prevent the RTBU from shutting down Opal machines.
