We’ve all had that experience. Wandering around an airport trying desperately to find a WiFi signal. Finding one and learning that “free” comes with all sorts of strings attached.

“Free” for 20 minutes every 24-hour period. “Free” if you buy an outrageously-priced coffee. “Free” if you’ve got a local number, which you don’t, of course, because you’re overseas, which is why your at the airport in the first place, with what now appears to be a six-hour layover without Internet access ahead of you. You could always activate the roaming on your phone – but we all know what sort of bills that leads to.

A new company wants to put an end to all of it.

WiWander has launched a pocket WiFi router, which is available for to rent online, providing travellers with unlimited WiFi access overseas.

Unlike other services, which charge users based on the amount of data they use, WiWander charges them for the number of days they travel. The routers are currently able to connect in Asia, the United States and parts of Europe.

“Australians can order a WiWander router online … and a router will be delivered to their door ready for use once they arrive at their destination,” WiWander’s Fangli Lim said. “[WiWander] makes it easier for travellers to know exactly how much they are spending on WiFi before they depart and eliminates the extra expense of hefty data-roaming,”

Not that WiWander’s rental fees are exactly designed for the budget traveller, either.

If you’re heading to Singapore or Taiwan, you can rent one of the company’s pocket routers for $5 a day. If you’re off to Japan or South Korea, it’s going to set you back $8 a day.

Just don’t plan on month-long road trips across the United States or Europe, which will cost you $15 a day in the former case and a whopping $20 a day in the latter.

Unless you’re travelling for business, in other words, you might opt for that airport coffee yet.
