Masks are also now mandatory for anyone over the age of twelve.

Greater Brisbane will enter a three-day lockdown from 6.00pm Friday evening after a quarantine hotel worker tested positive to the UK strain of COVID-19.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the stay-at-home order on Friday morning, saying “We need to this. I’ve accepted the strong advice from Dr Young. If we do not do this now, it could end up being a 30-day lockdown.”

The 3-day lockdown means that people living in Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton and Redlands will be required to stay home from 6.00pm tonight until 6.00pm on Monday, with only a few exceptions, including essential work, providing medical or healthcare, and shopping for necessities.

Video footage has emerged showing long queues forming at some supermarkets following the announcement.

Masks are also mandatory outside the home, although exempt from this ruling are children under 12. Fines of $200 will apply to anyone not wearing a mask.

“We can’t put it back in the box,” said Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young. “It’ll be too late if on Monday I stand up here in front of you and say ‘we’ve had ten cases and they’ve been out infectious in the community, infecting people.”

The quarantine hotel worker who tested positive to the highly-infectious UK strain of COVID-19 had unknowingly moved around the community for five days prior to testing positive.

Anyone who has visited Greater Brisbane since January 2nd, but is currently located elsewhere is also asked to self-isolate for the 3-day Brisbane lockdown period.
