Getting to Puglia from Rome just got a little easier thanks to the Espresso Salento, the new night train that will run from Rome to Lecce and back this summer.
FS Treni Turistici Italiani has launched the new service for the peak season so tourists and locals alike can head south for a sun-drenched getaway without having to drive or catch a flight. The night train will run from July 18 and depart Rome at 9pm and arrive in Lecce the following morning at 8.45am.
On the way to Lecce, Espresso Salento will stop at Caserta, Foggia, Bari C.le, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Fasano, Ostuni, Carovigno, Brindisi, before reaching its final destination. Sleeper carriages are available to book, with dinner and breakfast included and served in the restaurant car.
This first of its kind service will only run for the summer. It will depart Rome on July 25, August 13 and 22, and return from Lecce on July 26, August 14 and 23. So if you’re looking to spend 10 days in the Salento region discovering the coastal charms of Puglia, Lecce and surrounds, then this sleeper train is made for you.

How to get to Puglia from Rome?
The best way to get from Rome to Puglia is to train which takes 3h 5m and costs $14 – $80. Alternatively, you can bus, which costs $25 – $35 and takes 4h 12m. You can also hire a car and drive yourself, which takes approximately five hours. This new night service saves you a day of travel, so you can spend a day on Polignano A Mare rather than on a train.
