The Mayor of Queenstown Lakes, Jim Boult, has celebrated the easing of coronavirus travel restrictions across New Zealand in the most fitting way possible: by bungee jumping.

COVID-19 travel restrictions are being eased across New Zealand today to Alert Level 2, which allows a cautious reopening for many businesses in the Queenstown area.

The Queenstown Lakes mayor made the leap at Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre this morning as a celebration, signifying the end of the seven-week lockdown for the region.

According to TVNZ, Mr Boult said he was delighted to be marking the reopening of the Kawarau Bridge (often considered the home of bungee jumping) even if he had to jump off a bridge first thing in the morning to do it.

“We are still the country’s premier visitor destination, with a recent poll showing Queenstown as the number one tourist destination for New Zealanders, closely followed by Wānaka at number five,” Mr Boult told TVNZ.

Other New Zealand tourist attractions reopening today include the Auckland Harbour Bridge and Sky Tower.
