These are Meghan Markle’s 4 travel essentials

Meghan Markle travel

The Duchess of Sussex never leaves the palace without these four items, writes Hannah-Rose Yee.

Even before she joined the royal family, Meghan Markle lived a pretty jetset life.

Based between Los Angeles and Toronto filming her legal drama Suits, the actress often found herself on a plane. And that’s not even counting the holidays she took around the world in her pre-Prince Harry days to destinations like Italy, New Zealand, Ibiza and Formentera, New York, Tulum and Greece. As a royal couple, the pair have travelled to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Jamaica, Botswana and more. “Travelling gives you some perspective of what the rest of the world is like,” she once said. “I think that having the courage to step out of the norm is the most important thing.”

It’s not surprising, then, that she picked up a few tips along the way. Meghan’s arsenal of travel essentials are all tried and tested to provide self-care on the road. “It’s easy to run yourself ragged, hopping from one locale to another, sometimes feeling homesick, and other times just feeling plain-old sick,” the actress wrote on her now-defunct lifestyle blog The Tig.

These are the travel essentials that Meghan never leaves the palace without.

  1. Tea tree oil
Distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree (or the tea tree), tea tree oil is a bit of a wonder product. Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antifungal, even a tiny little vial goes a long way on a longhaul flight.

Meghan packs tea tree oil in her luggage despite the fact “it’s not the most glamorous thing” to travel with, as she wrote on The Tig. “But if you get a cut, a mosquito bite, a small breakout, no matter what, it’s my cure-all,” she added. “It’s inexpensive, it’s small enough to carry on and I bring it with me all the time.” You can also use tea tree oil as a disinfectant, wiping down the surfaces of your tray table and armrest on your seat on the airplane. It’s the one thing Meghan can’t travel without.

2. Probiotics
By now, most of us are well-versed in the importance of gut health and the role that a multi-strain probiotic can play in maintaining all the good bacteria in your stomach.

Meghan believes that everyone going on a holiday should “always travel with a high strain probiotic” and wash it down with plenty of water on the plane. “Hydrate like you’re dying of thirst,” she wrote in a post on The Tig. “Because even if you’re not, for your body, the thirst is real. This dynamic duo of probiotics and aqua will keep your get health in check and honestly stave off jet lag if you’re globetrotting on your travels.”We’ve never tried probiotics as a remedy for jetlag, but if it’s good enough for Meghan, it’s good enough for us.

3. Antiobiotic cream
Meghan’s next tip is a little hands-on. Courtesy of a “dear friend” of hers — who got the tip herself from Leonardo DiCaprio — Meghan advises taking a tiny little swab of the antiobiotic cream Neosporin and rubbing it on your nose.

“A dear friend of mine once told me that Leonardo DiCaprio gave her an excellent travel tip,” Meghan wrote on The Tig. “I know,” she jokingly added, “I could have written an entire post on this conversation alone.”

“He said to avoid getting sick on planes, he puts a little Neosporin on a cotton swab and coats the inside of his nostrils,” Meghan continued. “Not only does it create a barrier for germs, it also lubricates the skin in the nose. That’s important because when the skin cracks, germs can come running in, so the coating of the Neosporin double protects you. Now before you start calling TMZ, I cannot say 100% that Leo said this, but my friend is a good source, and regardless, it’s a great tip. Try it!”

It’s funny to think of both Meghan and Leo up in first class swiping at their nostrils with Neosporin. (We’re not sure what the equivalent would be in Australia, but Neosporin is a petroleum jelly-based antibiotic with a mix of eomycin sulfate, polymyxini B sulfate and bacitracin zinc.)

4. Hand sanitiser
The first thing Meghan does when she gets on a plane is whip out her hand wipes or hand sanitiser and give everything a quick once-over.

“I’m no germophobe, but when I get on a plane I always use some quick hand wipes or a travel sanitiser spray to wipe it all down,” she wrote on The Tig. “That includes the little TV, the service tray, and all the buttons around your seat.”

The cleaner everything is around you, the less likely it is that you’ll get sick en route to your destination, which would really ruin your holiday. And nobody, especially Meghan Markle, wants that.
