Who said travelling had to be expensive?
Most Aussies will travel this year, but it won’t come cheap. With global inflation, the increasing cost of living and the Australian dollar being weak in certain holiday hot spots like Europe, the UK and the US, those who do travel will most likely do so at a great expense.
For those looking to travel without blowing their life savings, Wethrift – a website that collates coupons, discounts and promo codes – has analysed which popular holiday destinations are the most affordable for 2024. How did it do this? By looking at the data of direct flights, affordability of public transport, price of a meal, cost of accommodation, passenger footfall, how much a food shop came to and the cost of tourist attractions. The site then gave the country a score out of 80.

So where do you get bang for your buck? The most affordable city to travel in is India’s capital, New Delhi, When jet-setting to New Delhi you can start your savings before take-off, as the city offers 145 different flight routes to choose from, meaning you can find the best deal on your flight. You can even sample some of New Delhi’s delicacies like butter chicken and chaat, for as little as $3.70 per meal.
Coming in second place is one of the hottest destinations for Aussies, Hanoi, Vietnam. Public transport can cost as little as $0.45, and if you’re staying in a self-catering property, you can enjoy a Vietnamese food shop for a budget-accommodating $63. Alternatively, if you want to get out and enjoy dinner amongst the locals, a meal will cost around $3.30 with the average price of a drink at $1.61.
