This lush tropical oasis just stepped things up a notch
Relaxed seaside vacations await at a newly refreshed retreat on a tiny Australian island in the Tasman Sea, east of Port Macquarie. Four months and $4million has seen Lord Howe Island’s seafront Capella Lodge given a luxurious new lease on life.
Boasting wide-ranging views of Lord Howe’s dramatic twin mountains and the neighbouring coral reef, Capella Lodge is located 600km off Australia’s east coast on a UNESCO World Heritage listed site of unique natural significance – one of the most unique sub-tropical islands on earth.

Capella’s nine suites have been given a new look by Baillie Lodges, while its spa has been reimagined in an airy loft space that overlooks the ocean.
The resort’s Makombo Loft now boasts new outdoor decks, which provide an idyllic spot to unwind on a lounge. There’s also a new heated plunge pool, for those days where the sea’s just a little too cool to brave. The Catalina Suite is bound to pique the interest of travelling families and groups, with its spacious loft addition, now with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an expansive deck and a roomy hot tub. For couples, the Lagoon Lofts now have day beds and hot tubs, too.

Capella’s new look is the imagining of its owners James and Hayley Baillie, who have brought together some of Australia’s leading designers and carefully chosen pieces to create a contemporary and laid-back feel.
Some things remain unchanged: the destination’s top-notch service, lush tropical setting and fresh food offerings maintain their place at Capella Lodge.
