Next time you’re flying Qantas, be sure to bring your appetite on board. Words by Samantha Stewart.

The nation’s carrier today announced it will be expanding its meal service options on domestic flights to cater to several dietary requirements.

The new menu will be served across multiple Australian ports, with new offerings across breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and supper.

So what can frequent flyers expect?

Bolognese calzone, chicken and potato Mediterranean croquettes, and zucchini and caramelised onion frittata are some of the new dishes being served. Complimentary wine and beer will continue to be available on select domestic flights.

Qantas to debut plant-based meat on flights, and in lounges

In addition to the new menu items, Qantas travellers will be able to try a selection of plant-based meat dishes as part of a trial in its Sydney domestic lounges this week.

Those making their way through the Sydney business lounge will have the chance to taste penne pasta bolognese with parmesan while cocktail pies with tomato sauce will be up for grabs at the Qantas Club.

Those keen to have a taste will be invited to share their feedback to help shape future menus.

Until today, Qantas had simplified its menu during the pandemic and cut down on meal options. Most recently the airline was called out for removing vegetarian options.

“I’m on the Adelaide to Sydney flight – I’m informed that #Qantas no longer serve vegetarian food on domestic flights (except Perth),” PlanetArk founder and businessman Jon Dee tweeted last month.

“The reason I have flown so much with Qantas is because the vegetarian food is always extremely good,” Mr Dee told NCA NewsWire.

The airline says the new menu now caters to several dietary requirements and includes a vegetarian option for all meals following recent customer feedback.

Compared to its competitors, Qantas remains the only domestic airline to offer complimentary food and beverages on its domestic Boeing 737s and Airbus A330s in Economy.
