This Qantas trial will keep the plane seat next to you empty from as little as $30

Forget fighting for the armrest.

Long-limbed flyers rejoice, Qantas recently announced that it is trialling a new program to improve your comfort level on a flight.

The Aussie airline’s new Neighbour Free option will allow economy passengers to purchase a ‘shadow’ seat next to theirs, which guarantees no one else can book that spot for the duration of their flight.

Shadow seats are expected to start at around $30 for short domestic routes, with higher rates charged for longer trips, such as Sydney to Perth.

The trial is currently only taking place on domestic flights, so long haul travellers will have to wait and see how things go before locking in those London fares.

HOW DO I BOOK A NEIGHBOUR FREE SEAT?

Eligible passengers will receive an email inviting them to take up the Neighbour Free offer within 48 hours of departure.

Once you’ve opted in, select your Standard Seat, and then select the highlighted Neighbour Free option next to it.

Your boarding pass will show the details for both your seat and the neighbouring seat once everything is locked in and paid for.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Once a Neighbour Free request has been confirmed, travellers won’t be able to make any further changes to, or cancel, their reservation.

Travellers are also warned that this seat is for extra space only, so don’t go popping any extra bags (or kids!) into the vacant spot.

You can find the full details for the Neighbour Free trial, and how to book your seat, on the Qantas website.
