Sad face.

South Australia has announced that it will close its borders to New South Wales travellers after several COVID-19 outbreaks in the state.

Premier Steven Marshall told media that there was too much uncertainty around the current coronavirus cases in NSW to allow the state’s planned border reopening to go ahead from July 20th.

South Australia will also scrap border openings for the ACT, following a cluster of confirmed COVID-19 cases at Casula’s Crossroads Hotel this week.

As of noon yesterday, Queensland has also closed its borders to residents from the NSW areas of Liverpool and Campbelltown, after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk declared the two Sydney suburbs to be COVID hotspots.

Under Queensland government travel restrictions free passage across the border is not allowed to anyone travelling from coronavirus hotspots.

A Queensland Health spokesman reportedly told News.com.au that anyone who had been in the two Sydney areas – and was not a Queensland resident – would be turned away at the border.

“We know that this is going to be very inconvenient for people who perhaps have already made plans… but our primary responsibility in South Australia is to the safety and welfare of all South Australians,” Mr Marshall told media.

South Australia had previously announced that it planned to reopen its borders to New South Wales and the ACT from July 20th.

The news of South Australia and Queensland’s most recent border closures comes just days after New South Wales closed its border with Victoria, in an attempt to halt the recent spread of COVID-19 cases.

Victoria recently reported 257 additional coronavirus cases, while New South Wales today reported an additional 49 cases.

Australia’s overall number of confirmed COVID-19 cases currently stands at 10,251, with 108 deaths.
