There’s no shortage of epic road trips to take in Australia. From the dramatic coastline to the red hot outback and dense rainforests and bush, no two road trips are the same. But which is considered the greatest? 

A new study from insurance company youi has revealed which road trip Aussies consider to be the best. Victoria’s Great Ocean Road has been ranked the greatest road trip Down Under, with 39% of respondents to the survey nominating the National Heritage-listed road as the best. The 240-kilometre stretch of road along the south-eastern coast is a stunning and dramatic three-day self-drive touring route that hugs the coast from surf capital Torquay through to the iconic 12 Apostles and ends in the historic fishing village of Port Fairy. Along the way you can detour through holiday hotspots like Aireys Inlet, Lorne and Apollo Bay.

In NSW, drivers who like to hit the road named the Sydney to Brisbane route as their favourite NSW road trip, while Queenslanders like the Queensland Outback best. Western Australians ranked the Perth to Esperance drive as the state’s best for a road trip. 

The youi survey also revealed that even though Aussies are feeling the pinch due to the cost-of-living crisis, more than half of those surveyed said they planned to road trip in the next two to three months. But how holidaymakers’ road trips differ depending on how old they are. 

When it comes to accommodation and road trip duration, 48% of travellers road tripped for 3 to 7 nights. Gen Zs were more likely to take shorter trips, with 39% of Gen Zs only going away for 1 to 2 nights. Younger drivers, including Gen Z and Millennials, were most likely to camp out in a tent (20% and 16% respectively), whereas Baby Boomers and Gen Y were most likely to stay in a budget motel (30%).
