For the love of safety, buckle up your seatbelt correctly.
TikTok is a great source for travel hacks. The social media app taught millions how to use a travel pillow correctly, introduced us to this game-changing travel pillow, and also the viral airport pillow hack, which helps serial over-packers avoid paying for excess baggage.
But the latest travel hack going viral on TikTok is likely to do more harm than good. Users have been creating videos showing themselves sitting in an aeroplane seat with their knees pulled to their chest, feet planted on the edge of the seat and the seatbelt secured around their ankles to hold their bent legs in place.
Those flexible enough to put themselves in this position claim that it is comfortable and helps them sleep on a plane, as they can rest their head on their knees. But what travellers might not know is that this can be a safety and health risk.
@suuga.spiceNo really this life hack is sooo brilliant. For years i have been trying to sit on the plane with my legs up and i move around so much i can never get comfortable but this was my saving grace. Ive been travelling for over 20 hours today and i really dont know if i couldve made it without this viral travel hack. Dm credit if you know cause i honestly have no clue where i saw it 💕♬ Ed bassmaster – The Potted Oasis

When flying, the safest position to be in is seated with your seatbelt fastened around your waist. If you were to suddenly hit turbulence, having your seatbelt around your ankles will not keep you safely secured to your seat. So while this travel hack may help you catch some shut-eye, it won’t keep you safe.
It’s also important to remember the health risks that bending/crossing your legs can cause when flying. By bending or crossing your legs, you’re restricting blood flow around the knee area, making a dangerous clot more likely.
While it may feel like you’ve won the lottery to find a comfortable position in an Economy seat, think twice about the risks an hour or two of comfort could have.
Happy flying, travellers.
