Why Tasmania is about to become an even bigger tourist destination

QANTAS is increasing flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Hobart by 30 percent, boosting the weekly schedule by 11 flights, and expanding its Tassie ground force by 10 pilots and 15 cabin crew.

The Qantas announcement, which will see increased flights to Hobart from March, is a response to a trend the Apple Isle welcomes.

Luke Martin from the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania told the ABC that the state was punching well about its weight in tourism, and that it’s on track to reach 1.5 million visitors by 2020.

“The rest of Australian tourism is actually pretty flat … [so] we’re stealing market share off our competitor destinations.”
