Who said plane food was boring? Words by Jasmine Kazlauskas.

Virgin Australia has unveiled its new in-flight dining menu and one particular item is set to get people talking.

From today, hungry passengers flying in economy on the airline will be able to indulge in a variety of new delights, including the super viral Cheeseburger Toastie.

The dish features 100 per cent Australian ground beef, melted cheese, ketchup, mustard and a pickle, finished with a cheesy sauce, all in between two slices of white bread.

The burger as a toastie idea recently went viral on social media, garnering more than 19.8 million views from people around the world who were desperate to try it.

It comes as the humble onboard ham and cheese toastie remains more popular than ever, with nearly a quarter of a million units sold on board Virgin Australia flights each year.

“As a modern and fresh brand, staying relevant to our guests matters,” Ali Dunn, Virgin Australia general manager product & customer strategy, told news.com.au.

“The cheeseburger toastie is a natural extension of that. It taps into a familiar, nostalgic flavour and builds on a trend that’s already gaining strong traction. We sell over a quarter of a million toasties on our flights each year, so they’re a proven favourite for our guests,” she said.

“The cheeseburger toastie taps into a viral food trend that’s taken off online, and we expect that momentum to carry through on-board.”
