Melbourne’s new AC Marriott Southbank ticks all the boxes of what new hotels should offer – thoughtfully designed guest rooms and suites, fabulous dining experiences and an infinity pool and cocktail bar with awe-inspiring views of the city’s skyline.
First look: This new Melbourne hotel may have the city’s best infinity pool
Did we mention it’s pet friendly?
Grand design
Located in the inner-city enclave of Melbourne’s Southbank, the 14th property within Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio in Australia is striking. The façade of bold, geometric glass sets the tone for clean, contemporary design with an emphasis on beauty and function. In the evening, the façade glows with LED lighting, acting as a welcoming beacon for residents and guests.
To infinity and beyond
It’s one thing for a new Melbourne hotel to boast incredible views, but when those views are from an infinity-edged swimming pool spanning the width of the building, you know you’re in for a treat. After soaking up the view, drop into the poolside bar, a relaxed spot to have a drink and enjoy alfresco dining.
Be our guest
The 205 guestrooms and suites look out over the city skyline and the Yarra River below. Taking inspiration from the industrial warehouses of South Melbourne, the natural timbers, stone tiling, earthy tones, brass highlights and soft layers of drapery all echo the Spanish roots of the AC brand, while creating a sense of calm and openness.
Dig in
If you want to eat in (and you really should), grab a table at Sorolla and watch the chefs in action in the open kitchen. The dishes are modern and celebrate the essence of Spain. For something lighter but equally as delectable, try the tapas-style snacks and light meals from Triana Bar. Related story: Make up for lost time with our Melbourne restaurant guide
Cheers to that
For drinks, head to Triana Bar where guests can mingle at the long, freestanding bar. While you’re there, order the signature AC gin and tonic – a specialty cocktail served in a stunning glass created by sculptural artist Adam Walmon. The glass is said to heighten the taste, aroma and palate experience and who are we to argue with that?
Get to work
As well as the swimming pool, you can get your gym fix at the 24-hour fitness centre and if you need to hold a meeting or event, there are flexible, light-filled spaces throughout the hotel, along with an outdoor covered terrace room. It’s right beside the infinity pool, so after you’re done working, we know where to find you.
